Job Description

Company Overview

Merritt Contracting is a leading construction and excavation firm with over two decades of proven success. We specialize in large-scale earthmoving, site preparation, and infrastructure projects across residential, commercial, and industrial markets. We are committed to delivering quality results on time while maintaining the highest standards of safety and client satisfaction.

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Excavator Operator with pIpe experience to join our growing team. The successful candidate will operate heavy machinery (excavators, track hoes, etc.) for large-scale earthmoving and grading tasks, ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate operation. This role also requires a willingness to step out of the cab and assist crew members on the ground with various tasks, including site cleanup, basic labor, and equipment maintenance. A strong understanding of soil types, slope/grade requirements, and good teamwork skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate Excavators and Heavy Equipment
    • Safely maneuver excavators and other heavy machinery to move earth, gravel, sand, or other materials for mass grading and excavation projects.
    • Working in a pipe crew
    • Follow specific job instructions, site plans, and grade stakes with precision.
  • Perform Routine Equipment Inspections
    • Conduct pre- and post-operation checks (fluid levels, tire or track conditions, safety devices).
    • Report mechanical issues or potential hazards to supervisors immediately.
  • Maintain Worksite Safety
    • Comply with OSHA regulations, site safety protocols, and Merritt Contracting's internal policies.
    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure machinery is operated according to safety procedures.
  • Assist Crew on the Ground
    • Step out of the excavator or other machinery as needed to help with site cleanup, basic labor tasks, or to coordinate activities with ground crew.
    • Demonstrate flexibility and a collaborative attitude to maintain workflow and project efficiency.
  • Coordinate with Team
    • Communicate with site managers, ground crew, and other operators to ensure smooth workflow and avoid overlapping tasks.
    • Provide feedback on soil conditions, project challenges, or resource needs.
      • Maintain stable trench walls and proper slope grades to minimize risks.
Qualifications
  • Experience
    • At least 2-3 years operating excavators or similar heavy machinery, with pipe experience strongly preferred.
  • Skills & Knowledge
    • Familiarity with soil types, grade reading, and mass earthmoving techniques.
    • Ability to follow safety guidelines meticulously and operate machinery in close proximity to personnel and other equipment.
    • Basic mechanical aptitude to spot equipment issues or perform minor on-site fixes.
    • Willingness to get off the machine and perform other labor or cleanup tasks as needed.
  • Licenses/Certifications
    • Valid driver's license and clean driving record (CDL is a plus, but not required unless specifically noted).
    • Relevant heavy equipment certifications or training in excavation safety (OSHA 10 or 30 is a plus).
  • Physical Requirements
    • Able to sit, stand, crouch, and lift throughout the workday.
    • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and on rough terrain.
  • Work Ethic
    • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently.
    • Strong communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.
